In the Lucas/Fairview area, gas furnaces are the most common form of central heating system. If you have natural gas and your home was constructed in the last 15 years, there’s a very good chance your HVAC system is a furnace & AC type. That’s great news, because furnace heating systems are very reliable and in most cases repairs are quick and inexpensive. If your furnace or central heat isn’t working properly, give us a call or text today.
Your thermostat will protect your HVAC system by causing it to delay when switching between heat and cooling mode. You may expect to be able to just increase the temperature a few degrees and a warm blast will immediately come from your vents, but you may not realize that the “lockout” from your thermostat will prevent that from happening. It’s usually only a 5 minute delay, but make sure your thermostat is set to heating mode and you have the set temperature above the indoor temperature a couple degrees. Then, wait a little while. If “heating” is blinking, it normally means your HVAC system is in the delay period. If it goes solid and you still don’t have any heat, give us a call.
Running out of gas or not having the gas turned on happens more times than you’d think, especially when heating your home with LP (liquid propane). If you have other gas appliances in your home such as gas logs or a gas stove, make sure they are working properly. If they are working, then you’ll probably have to give us a call, but if they are also off, it might be a gas supply issue. If that’s the case, you’ll want to turn off all the appliances and make sure all gas control valves are set to off, and call your gas company for help.
Air flow is very important to any central HVAC system. Bad things happen when airflow is reduced below the design specifications. On a furnace, three things in particular can happen when your filters get so clogged they choke your system’s air flow:
What does it do?
The furnace heat exchanger is used to transfer the heat from the flames into the building air flow. The heat exchanger is the primary component of a gas-fired furnace.
Why did it fail?
Heat exchangers expand and contract every time they are heated up. Over time they will crack and start leaking carbon monoxide into the building air flow.
Will it fail again?
Heat exchangers are designed to last 15 years with proper usage and maintenance. An over-fired furnace can shorten the lifetime of the heat exchanger.
What does it do?
The blower motor is the power behind the blower wheel that moves the air throughout the house. The blower motor allows for a comfortable living environment.
Why did it fail?
Over time, blower motors will fail as the bearings become worn out. They can also develop internal shorts over the lifetime of the unit.
Will it fail again?
Fan motors commonly last 10 to 15 years with proper maintenance and normal usage. Older motors have to be oiled yearly.
What does it do?
The safety pressure switch is used to sense the pressure build up inside the exhaust flue pipe. The safety pressure switch is to ensure the furnace has a clear flue pipe before the flame is ignited.
Why did it fail?
Safety pressure switches commonly fail when they become flooded due to lack of or poor maintenance leading to the drain line backing up. They can also fail with age.
Will it fail again?
With proper usage and maintenance, the safety pressure switch should last the lifetime of the unit, but they commonly start to become weak after 10 years age.
What does it do?
Wiring is a copper or aluminum conductor that allows electricity to run from the main house panel to the equipment. The wire is also used to move electricity around inside the unit to various parts for proper operation.
Why did it fail?
Wire fails when the insulation around the conductor wears out and cracks, causing a short. Wire fails can be caused by age or the unit drawing too much power. Shorts can be a fire hazard as well.
Will it fail again?
Wire normally lasts the lifetime of the unit, with proper maintenance and usage. Wiring will fail again if the damage is caused by overpowering and the problem is not corrected.
What does it do?
The thermostat is the main control for the unit. It senses the air in the building and turns the heat or the A/C on to keep the air at a comfortable temperature inside the building.
Why did it fail?
Thermostats commonly fail with age or from power surges. Older thermostats will need their batteries replaced regularly to keep working.
Will it fail again?
Thermostats are designed to last about 10 years before the circuitry begins to go bad.
What does it do?
Ignitor probes are used to ignite the gas in the furnace. When ignitor probes are turned on, they increase in temperature until they reach a temperature that causes ignition.
Why did it fail?
Ignitors primarily fail due to age. An ignitor works very much like a light bulb and will burn out over time. Power surges can also destroy an ignitor.
Will it fail again?
Ignitors are designed to last about 10 years with proper usage and maintenance.
